Visitors of Reykjavik have a lot of historical attractions to see once they have arrived to the said city in Iceland. One of the most notable attractions is Domkirkjan Reykjavik. Located in Austurvöllur Reykjavík, Domkirkjan is a small yet stunning Lutheran church which holds a significant part of the country’s culture and history. Built in 1796, this church has been a place of worship for centuries and the exact location wherein sovereignty and independence were blessed and supported by the Icelandic church. This is also where Iceland’s national anthem was first sung in 1874.

Inside the church, guests can marvel at the baptismal font carved and donated by the renowned 19th century master sculptor, Bertel Thorvaldsen. In addition, guests can also view the authentic Icelandic interiors and furnishings as well as selected portraits and relics. After wandering around the church and taking images, visitors may also take the chance of experiencing a moment of reflection in one of the 600 seats of the chronological institution. As a final note, Domkirkjan is open during weekdays from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, and admission is free of charge.
